Disc Golf Overview

Disc golf is a unique game most played in recreational centers all around the United States and even in other countries. It is a cross between Frisbee and golf. The modern version is played with organized rules and tournaments have even been held all over the United States. What started out as a past time by flinging disc shaped objects to targets like trees has evolved with multiple types of discs used and throw styles.

It has definitely changed since Ronald Gibson and his buddies in Bladworth Elementary School first played at around 1926. This was the first record that a game like disc golf was played. Gibson and his friends first called it “Tin Lid Golf” mainly because they used the lids of the trash cans to hit targets like trees and fence posts.

Kevin Donelly then started the evolution of disc golf by playing it, then called Frisbee golf, in the recreational parks that he handled starting 1959. He was the first one to formulate rules and organize tournaments in the city playgrounds that he supervised. In 1965, a tournament sponsored by Wham-O had hula hoops for holes but with well-organized details like rules and penalties. George Sappenfield then started getting involved in the sport and started organizing games in the playgrounds in Fresno California.

In 1968, Sappenfield became Parks and Recreation Supervisor for Conejo Recreation and Park District in Thousand Oaks, California where he introduced the game to other people. He then contacted Wham-O to assist him by sponsoring Frisbees and hula hoops which they did. His friends in UC Berkley then started playing the game in the campus where a permanent course was made in 1970.

Disc golf is certainly an interesting game which is why it has become popular even outside the United States like Central and Western Europe, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Australia and Canada. It has an organized list of rules like establishing position wherein a thrown disc lands and comes to rest as well as penalty for out of bounds disc and even an organized system on who will tee off first which will depend on the players’ standing on the scorecard.

There are a range of discs that are used in a game like a putter which resembles the conventional Frisbee. The mid-range discs a bit of a sharper edge thus giving it improved aerodynamics and finally, the driver which has sharp and beveled edge.

This game definitely an exciting park game but can you imagine if it was played in large indoor area like the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada. Sure, it sound unlikely for now but then again all big games started from humble beginnings.

Basketball started as a women’s game for instance. With the wide area of the MGM Grand Garden Arena, a large match can be organized and can be viewed by thousands of people. Who knows, in a few decades, disc golf just might become the next best thing in sports. It is certainly exciting enough to have that potential.

Disc Golf History

Disc golf is also known as frisbee golf where players use flying discs and throw at targets. It started out as just an activity to past the time and play around in a park but later grew into something more organized. There is now an official association, the professional Disc Golf Association, which handles organized tournaments. There are also a lot of disc golf courses all around the U.S. and is actually played in around 40 countries all over the world.

The first time disc golf was played was by Ronald Gibson and his friends in Bladworth Elementary School at Bladwoth, Saskatchewan Canada way back 1926. They played the game with trees as targets and they called it Tin Lid Golf. The game would then fade away until the 1960s when people started playing it again in Pendleton King Park in Georgia where they would toss Frisbees into empty trash cans. Kevin Donelly started playing in 1961 when he was a Recreation Supervisor for Newport Beach, California and started organizing tournaments on the playgrounds that he supervised.

Other noteworthy individuals involved in disc golf includes George Sappenfield who popularized it in Thousand Oaks, California as well as “Steady Ed” Headrick who started designing the game like how it is played now like using chains and baskets for targets while Dave Dunipace invented the modern golf disc. Disc golf in now played in countries like Japan, New Zealand, Canada, South Korea, Australia, United States and a lot more.

The game starts on each hole, this is their version of teeing off, with players throwing from designated areas that are usually marked by cement or a rubber pad. This game has a lot of rule including holing out and out of bounds. There are two types of holing out. Holing out on a basket means the player must be able to throw the disc and it should make it inside the bottom basket or within the chains. Another form of holing out is striking a designated target area of an object using the disc.

The game also has safety rules like never throwing a disc towards an area that another person occupies unless they are fully aware of it. There are also quite a variety of discs that players use like a putter, mid-range and driver. All of these discs have their own characteristics and uses. Having this kind of recreational activity is great for camping or pretty much any park. Physical activities allow people to be more interactive and focus on more productive way of spending their time. Disc golf is a better recreational activity than what most of the youth engage in today.

A lot of the youth consider something else when the words physical activity is mentioned which tends to lead to signs and symptoms of pregnancies. Disc golf is a great way for families and friends to spend time with each other and just have fun. Having fun as a family can improve many things within the family and to think that it all can happen just by playing disc golf.

First, it is quite a very simple game. Disc golf is basically golf but instead of using golf balls you use hard plastic discs. The objective of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc.  Wherever your throw lands, you pick up the disc from that spot, and throw it again, aiming for the pin. You start off on a concrete platform which is similar to a golf tee, and throw towards the basket target, until you get your disc in the basket. Disc gold courses are often lined with trees and even water hazards which makes for a very challenging shot. Other similarities with the traditional golf include the drivers, mid-range discs, and putters, although you can easily play a round of disc golf with a single disc if that’s the only thing available.

Second, not only is disc golf very enjoyable, it’s also cheap. You don’t have to worry about money. Gold discs prices ranges from only $6 or $7 at the local sports store, which is all you really need to get started. This is extremely cheaper compared to other hobbies like shopping, watching movies in the cinema, photography, scrapbooking, etc. that you don’t have to worry about finding yourself in debt plus you get the same amount of fun plus the excitement of playing in the field with your close friends. The point is, this game is for everyone. So buy that disc, invite your friends and get that fun started.
